Sexuality Acceptance beyond the Classroom
“Much of the victimization of LGB youths take place in schools, and it may be unrealistic for schools to guarantee privacy and safety; nonetheless, it is important to enhance the school climate for LGB youths” (Charlotte & D’Augelli, 2001).
The reading reminds me of what is going on in the world now because students are facing many stressors in their lives both within the classroom and in society due to their sexual orientation. The victimization of LGB youths has caught the attention of people in powerful positions such as Lady Gaga. Through the use of her status and accessibility to reach millions of people worldwide, she uses her lyrics as a catalyst to vocalize and create awareness of what LGB youths are enduring in today’s society. In the song “Born this way”, she touches upon sexuality. The following lyrics; “No matter gay, straight, or bi, Lesbian, transgendered life, I’m on the right track baby, I was born to survive”, emphasizes the fact that all people no matter of what sexual orientation are human beings, have the right to be who they are and have been brought to this world to overcome challenges and survive. She has opened the doors for the rest of the people in influential positions such as teachers, to educate students about differences and acceptance. It is our responsibilities as facilitators of learning, to provide a safe haven within our classrooms for all students, model respect and establish a sense of unity. The video “Born this way”, unmasks what is currently occurring worldwide with people in society and essentially illustrates that life is a continuous circle and we are all the makeup of it. http://youtu.be/wV1FrqwZyKw
