Today I came home from school and my mom asked me what did I learn.
“What did I learn?” I asked in return,
“Yes, what did you learn,” she replied with concern.
“Today I learned how to say hello”
She said to me, “Didn’t you know?”
“Yes I knew how to say it but now I can say it to more than just you.”
“More than just me” She asked to affirm.
“Yes more than just you” I said to confirm.
“Well” she said, “why don’t you teach me a new term”
“Shalom, Bonjour, Mambo” I started.
She raised her brow, and I continued
“Barev, Buenos Dias, Ciao” I said, whole hearted.
“I didn’t know there were so many ways to say hello” she admitted
“Neither did I, but now that I know, I am committed.
Tomorrow I’ll learn how to say good-bye
But for now: dzien dobry, ola, ellohay.”
“I pity other kids in a city who cannot say hello to all.
What a school I go to that can teach me
the many differences in my community.”
